The Conjuring: Last Rites finally lands with an ending that leaves no one walking out calm.

So, after nine movies of demons, dolls, and one very haunted farmhouse, The Conjuring: Last Rites closes the book on Ed and Lorraine Warren. It is a goodbye, but not the kind that leaves you wrecked walking out of the theater.

Do Ed and Lorraine die in Last Rites?

Nope, not on screen. By the time the credits hit, both Warrens are alive and set up for a genuinely happy ending. The movie makes it clear they retire from chasing ghosts and actually enjoy their lives together for years. Eventually, like real people, time catches up: Ed suffers a stroke and passes away a few years later with Lorraine by his side, and then she passes on after him. It is bittersweet if you know their whole story, but the film itself sends them off smiling.

The last case: a haunted mirror and a family in trouble

Interestingly, the big finale is not some greatest-hits remix of the Warrens. Most of Last Rites is about the Smurl family and a mysterious mirror that houses a spirit. That mirror is tangled up with the Warrens in a way that pulls them deeper than usual, and the movie slowly ties that thread back to their legacy.

When things finally hit a boil, Lorraine and Judy (yes, their daughter) team up and push the entity out. It is a neat mother-daughter moment the series has been circling for a while, and it leaves the Smurls free of the haunting.

How the movie leaves the Warrens

  • The Smurl case becomes Ed and Lorraine's final investigation.
  • Lorraine has a vision showing the calm, content retirement ahead of them.
  • They quit active cases, spend their years writing books and teaching, and actually get that quiet life together the films rarely allow.
  • Years later, Ed has a stroke and dies with Lorraine caring for him; she passes away sometime after.

Is the franchise over? Not really

Even with the Warrens' story wrapped, the door is very obviously still open. This universe has already run plenty of spinoffs without them, and Last Rites hints at two easy paths: build out from earlier cases or shift some spotlight to Judy, who could keep the family business going. Point is, this is a clean, respectful farewell to Ed and Lorraine that does not handcuff future movies.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is now in theaters.
