Some of them really deserved it…

As streaming services have been at the center of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes this year, they have been hit hard by the demonstrations. Even giants such as HBO (currently known as Max) are no exception. As a result, the company has had to cancel some of its projects.

Here's a comprehensive list of every show HBO has ditched in 2023.

Gossip Girl (2 seasons, canceled in January)

The reboot of The CW's eponymous cult show premiered on HBO Max in 2021 and proved to be an instant success. Naturally, it was renewed for a second season that concluded in January this year. Subsequently, it was canceled by the streaming service.

Avenue 5 (2 seasons, canceled in February)

This Star Trek-inspired sitcom starring the legendary Hugh Laurie, had a successful initial run upon its debut in 2020 and was instantly renewed. The second season release was delayed due to the pandemic. And now, the show has been canceled altogether.

Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler (3 seasons, canceled in February)

As evident from the title, the show belongs to the DC universe. Spanning three seasons from 2019 to 2022, it was very much beloved by the audience. Sadly, this crime drama didn't make it past that point.

South Side (3 seasons, canceled in February)

This lesser-known sitcom was pretty popular with HBO viewers which is, perhaps, why it had had a three-season run before it was canceled earlier this year.

Perry Mason (2 seasons, canceled in June)

Set in 1930s Los Angeles, this criminal drama from Robert Downey Jr. dropped its second season in spring. Sadly, it didn't garner ample viewership to be renewed for a third installment – ergo, it was canceled.

A Black Lady Sketch Show (4 seasons, canceled in July)

The already-iconic skit show by Robin Thede also premiered its most recent season in spring. Unfortunately, HBO decided to part way with the project after a wonderful four-season run.

The Idol (1 season, canceled in August)

The most controversial release of 2023, The Weeknd's foray into the television industry was a failure despite all the buzz surrounding it. Naturally, it was canceled after a sole season in summer.

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2 seasons, canceled in September)

This sports dramedy revolves around fictionalized members of 1980s Los Angeles Lakers basketball teams as they navigate their professional and personal lives. It's been just a month since its last episode was released, and the show is effectively over now.
