One of them is unfairly given the moral high ground.

Summary

  • Mandy and Georgie's arc is one of the most popular storylines on the show.
  • The two got off to a very troubled start.
  • Mandy's treatment of Georgie is disturbing.

Although Young Sheldon is named after The Big Bang Theory's Dr. Sheldon Cooper, Shelly is not the most popular character on the show. The other Coopers are far more beloved by the audience than the title character, around whom the sitcom is supposed to revolve.

Sheldon's mother Mary is loved for her conflicted and complex nature. His father, George, is admired for his easy-going demeanor and devotion to family. Meemaw is the show's ultimate fan favorite, thanks to her feisty personality. Shelly's twin sister Missy is adored for her social skills. And older brother Georgie is celebrated as the family fall guy.

In this light, it's no surprise that Georgie's relationship arc with Mandy is one of the most popular on Young Sheldon, as it explores their transformation from an illegal fling to near hatred to acceptance and love. But as popular as this storyline is with viewers, it's also quite disturbing for one reason.

Who's to Blame?

The main reason Georgie and Mandy's arc is so popular is probably because of its unconventional nature and the drama surrounding their relationship. The two met at Meemaw's laundromat, lied about their ages to make each other like the other more, and had sex after one date. As they grew to like each other, they regretted the lies and told each other the truth. But while Georgie was okay with Mandy being in her late twenties, she was furious that he was only seventeen.

Of course, Mandy had every right to be angry with Georgie, since his lie made her a felon. But that's not the most problematic part of their relationship. Soon after they broke up, Mandy found out she was pregnant. Sure, Georgie was scared when he heard the news, but he proved to be a decent man and offered his help and support in raising the child. However, Mandy was livid and blamed him for ruining her life. But was it fair of Mandy to blame it all on Georgie?

A Consensual Act

Georgie did not force Mandy to have sex with him. He didn't insist on not wearing protection. Or rather, she didn't insist on wearing any. As the more mature person, it was her responsibility to protect herself. After all, she was having sex with a near stranger she barely knew, and she didn't force him to use a sheath.

There's no blaming the victim. But there were no violations, Mandy did everything on her own volition, and it was her responsibility to take care of her sexual health. So it's unfair of her to blame everything on Georgie. Fortunately, the two have grown to love each other and are currently engaged, but the treatment of their history is still concerning.

Episode 6 of Season 7 will premiere on April 4th.
