The Batman Sequel Delay Bombshell: Matt Reeves Says The Journey Is Taking Longer Than He Wanted

Here is where The Batman 2 stands: it is still very much happening, it is taking its sweet time, and yes, Matt Reeves knows you are checking your watch.

"We're getting ready. We're basically entering prep. We'll be making the movie in the spring," director Matt Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter at the Emmys. "It's been a journey that is taking longer than I would've wanted for a lot of reasons, a lot of personal reasons, but most important reason is getting it to a place where I just felt like it was the best script we could possibly write."

That tracks with what has been going on behind the scenes for a while: most of the updates have been about the script. It was seemingly turned in around June 2025, which lines up with Reeves now saying they are in prep and aiming to shoot in the spring. The first movie hit theaters in 2022 (after its own delay), the sequel was originally penciled in for 2026, then got pushed last year to October 2027. It has been a trek.

Who is in, who is out (for now)

We still do not know much about the sequel itself, but there are a couple of concrete cast tidbits from Reeves and company:

• Colin Farrell has read the script. He is back as Penguin, but in a small role.
• Cristin Milioti, who plays Sofia Falcone on The Penguin, is not in this one. Reeves told MTV at the Emmys that by the time that show was underway, The Batman 2 script was already too far along to suddenly wedge Sofia into the story without breaking it. He praised Milioti and showrunner Lauren LeFranc for what they did with that version of the character and left the door open for future possibilities, just not here.
• The gist from Reeves: they prioritized the story they had over forcing in cool ideas that did not fit. Inside baseball, but useful context.
• Release date is locked for October 1, 2027. Plan your brooding accordingly.

Reeves sounds confident and protective of the script, which explains the pace. Prep now, shoot in the spring, and keep the crossover cameos measured so the movie does not wobble. If you need a DC fix sooner, DCU Chapter One is the next big wave while Gotham keeps stewing.
