Matt Reeves says Robert Pattinson gave The Batman 2 script an enthusiastic thumbs-up, a strong sign the sequel is roaring to life.

Matt Reeves finally put The Batman 2 script in Robert Pattinson's hands, and good news: the guy behind the cowl is into it. Reeves says Pattinson signed off on what it does with both Batman and Bruce Wayne, and he sounds genuinely fired up about where this sequel is going.

Reeves on Pattinson's reaction

"I thought that he really would [like the script] because the things that it does for his character, for Batman and for Bruce, have never been done before in this way," Reeves told The Hollywood Reporter. "I had a feeling that he would respond in this way, but the fact that he did was incredibly encouraging."

That tracks with how locked down this thing is. Plot specifics are under serious wraps again, to the point where Pattinson reportedly had trouble just getting the script out of the high-security pouch it arrived in. That is some A+ spycraft for a superhero movie, but it makes sense: like the first one, Reeves says Part II is built as a detective story. Translation: it lives or dies on mystery, and they are not about to let the twists leak. He basically says spilling surprises would be an extra heartbreak on top of everything else.

Where things stand

The first film hit theaters in March 2022, the sequel got the quick greenlight, and then... delays. Lots of them. The good news: cameras are finally expected to roll next spring. Pattinson is back, of course, with Colin Farrell returning as Oz Cobb and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon. And yes, there's a date on the calendar.

  • Filming: aiming to start next spring
  • Returning cast: Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell (Oz Cobb), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon)
  • Release date: October 1, 2027
  • Tone/approach: another hard-boiled detective story, secrecy cranked to 11
  • Fun/weird detail: that script came in a high-security pouch that Pattinson reportedly struggled to open

Bottom line: Reeves is talking like he has a new angle on Batman and Bruce we genuinely haven’t seen, Pattinson is on board, and the production train might finally be leaving the station. Now we just have to wait two more years to see what they’re hiding.
