The Batman 2 co-writer Mattson Tomlin is pushing to revive a Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man 4, saying he’s trying to link up with Sam Raimi after a social media exchange stoked fan hopes.

Here we go again: The Batman: Part II co-writer Mattson Tomlin says he is trying to get in touch with Sam Raimi about, yes, a Tobey Maguire Spider-Man 4. This is not a studio announcement. It is a writer publicly angling on social media. But it is enough to get the Raimi-verse faithful buzzing, again.

What Tomlin actually said

Over the weekend, Tomlin dropped a one-word update under a fan post on X: "Trying!" That was September 29, 2025, and he was specifically talking about reaching out to Raimi. A day later, a fan account dedicated to Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst flagged the exchange and repeated what Tomlin has been saying for a while now: his pitch is a Raimi-Tobey Spider-Man story about Peter juggling marriage and fatherhood.

"Honestly right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey's Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father. Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards given the last 8 films."

That was from a July 2025 fan Q&A, where Tomlin laid out his angle more clearly. The gist: older Peter, dad Peter, still saving New York while trying to be present at home. He has also been replying to Raimi-focused fan accounts, including one that nudged him with, "Call me Mattson, and by call me I mean call the real Sam Raimi." The man is very online about this.

Where Raimi stands

Raimi has not said yes to any of this. Back in 2022, he told Rolling Stone he still loves these characters, but that a return is not simple.

"My love for the characters hasn't diminished one iota,"

but there would be

"a lot of questions that would have to be answered."

How we got here

  • Late 2000s - A Raimi-directed Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire was in development, then collapsed when Raimi cited creative differences. Sony pivoted to a reboot.
  • 2021 - Maguire pops back up in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the nostalgia switch gets flipped hard.
  • 2022 - Raimi tells Rolling Stone he still loves the characters but is noncommittal about a return.
  • July 2025 - Tomlin tells fans his ideal Spider-Man 4 centers on Tobey's Peter as a husband and father.
  • September 29, 2025 - Tomlin replies "Trying!" on X when asked if he is reaching out to Raimi.
  • September 30, 2025 - A Tobey-and-Kirsten fan account highlights Tomlin's comment and his fatherhood pitch.
  • Right now - Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have not announced or confirmed any Tobey-led Spider-Man 4.

Reality check

This is all informal. Tomlin is a legit writer with a big DC sequel on deck, and he clearly wants this gig, but there is no deal, no script in play, and no greenlight from Marvel or Sony. Consider it public campaigning backed by enthusiastic fans, with Raimi still a giant question mark.
