It just goes to show how humble the actress is.

Summary

  • Wizards of Waverly Place was one of the most popular shows on Disney Channel.
  • Selena Gomez had her breakthrough role on the show.
  • The actress can't help but tear up when talking about the WoWP reboot.

Every generation remembers different things that made their childhood better. Kids of the 2000s probably thank Disney Channel for providing many entertaining TV shows and cartoons. And in that multitude of programming, there are shows whose impact can still be felt today. Wizards of Waverly Place is definitely one of them.

Premiering in 2007, Wizards of Waverly Place ran for four seasons and two made-for-TV movies, drawing millions of viewers to the screens. The story of the Russos, magicians who live and run a cafe in New York, centered on Selena Gomez's Alex, a seemingly ordinary teenager who didn't like school and underwent special magical training with her siblings to one day pass a test for the right to be the holder of the family's magic.

As Alex got into all kinds of trouble, both mundane and magical, she became one of Disney Channel's most popular characters and Wizards of Waverly Place one of its most popular shows. Perhaps that is why the news of a reboot of the show caused such a stir earlier this year. But Selena Gomez has another reason to be excited about the revival, and a very touching one at that.

A Show of Great Personal Significance

'I'm so excited!' Selena Gomez recently told her Only Murders in the Building co-star Martin Short about the upcoming reboot. '[Wizards of Waverly Place] is a show that means a lot to me.'

Although WoWP wasn't Selena Gomez's first acting job, it was a project that helped launch her career. In 2002, at the age of ten, she landed a recurring role on the PBS children's show Barney & Friends. Small roles in movies followed, including Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over. Interestingly, Gomez also appeared on two other popular Disney Channel shows, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and Hannah Montana, before landing the role of Alex on Wizards of Waverly Place in 2007.

Following the success of WoWP, Selena Gomez has had many roles in film and television – Another Cinderella Story, Hotel Transylvania, Princess Protection Program, and Only Murders in the Building – while also making solid inroads in the music industry. She has released three studio albums with Selena Gomez & the Scene and three solo albums. Now, Gomez is set to make a cameo appearance in the reboot titled Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, which she is also executive producing. And she's very excited about returning to her roots.

'It brings me to tears because that is the beginning of where I started and to honor it in this way has truly been a blast and I can't wait for people to see it,' Selena Gomez explained.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will premiere on the Disney Channel later this year.
