The 5 Outlander Characters Fans Just Love to Hate (and They Have a Point)
Number 1 will shock you.
Outlander is a popular show that has won several awards. But as with all shows, regardless of their popularity, there are some characters that fans just love to hate.
Like these 5:
5. Bree
Coming from 1960s America and supporting the civil rights movement, Bree seems a little too accepting of the way things are in North Carolina. Surely the show would benefit from her showing some discomfort – and not always referring to Lizzy as her 'servant', which kind of buys into the whole class structure that she seems to be against.
Ultimately, this is a badly written character who makes strange decisions and doesn't seem to have any guiding principles.
4. Roger
Now, this is a character who is deliberately complex. He's a flawed man who often tries to do the right thing, but so often fails.
Roger was always going to divide audiences, but his misogyny makes him a little too unpalatable. It's one of those situations where we use modern standards to judge actions from over 200 years ago, but at the end of the day he displays coercive, controlling and narcissistic behaviour towards Bree.
3. Malva
Before we go any further, let's make it clear that I'm aware that TV Malva is different from book Malva. In fact, book Malva is, by all accounts, a complicated character that you love and hate in equal measure. That does not come across on screen.
Malva is basically evil, manipulative and totally lacking in compassion. Had the show's writers delved a little deeper into her past, she might have been seen differently. But the fans just don't like her, especially the way she treats Claire.
2. Johnathan Randall
This guy is a sadist. Not only is he violent, but he enjoys it. Who can forget the scene where he calls Corporal Hawkins into the room and insists that he kick Claire after Randall himself has punched her to the floor?
Sure, nobody likes him. But it's a great portrayal of a terrible man.
1. Claire
Yep. There are people out there who don't like her. They find her irritating, a bit too perfect and a bit shallow. Whether they 'love to hate' her or not (what with her being one of the main characters) is debatable.
But apparently they're still watching. So something's keeping them coming back, and it's not her.
