Ted Lasso Season 3 Just Delivered Its Cringiest Scene Yet
The moment when an important message has been handled the wrong way.
Despite its apparent focus on sports, Ted Lasso has always been about the drama that takes place not only on the soccer field, but also in the personal lives of its characters. One of the reasons people have come to love the show so much is the therapeutic messages conveyed through the plot, allowing both the characters and the audience to overcome their traumas.
One of the central themes of the most recent Episode 18 is the issue of non-consensual exposure of private information. The general consensus among the audience is that no one has the right to violate other people's personal space and expose their private information, regardless of whether that person is famous or not, and therefore such unethical actions should be condemned.
But did the show manage to get this message across successfully?
No, according to fans. As Keeley's sex tape was leaked in the last episode, the AFC Richmond team gathered in their locker room to discuss the issue. They came to the right conclusions about the inappropriateness of exposing people's private lives and the harm of misogyny. However, the important idea was undermined in the very next scene, which fans claim to be the cringiest moment on Ted Lasso so far.
'And all of that only to have [Isaac] completely disregard Colin's privacy immediately after by grabbing his phone?' one of the fans complained, distressed with how pointless the whole conversation between the teammates was.
Seconds after agreeing that breaking personal boundaries and exposing other people's information is wrong, Isaac ripped Colin's phone out of his hands without his consent. But this act wasn't just unethical in itself — Isaac saw his fellow team member's personal photos, learning about Colin's sexual identity that he hasn't yet disclosed publicly.
Isaac's silly act invalidated the very message that the episode was meant to send to viewers, and this whole scene was unbearably cringy as a result.
In addition, some fans noted that the whole locker room conversation was unnecessarily corny and unnatural, which only made it harder to take the point seriously.
'The felt like a PSA. This is an important conversation to be had but this could've been done a lot better,' a fan summed up. Instead of delving deeper into the subject, the players just exchanged one-liners as if to break the fourth wall and tell the viewer about what's ethical and what's not. Ultimately, the scene felt like a social advertisement — and not a good one too.
It's a shame that one of Ted Lasso's concluding episodes gave us the most cringe-worthy scene in the entire series, but we hope that the remaining four episodes will mend this with better writing and some clear, positive messages for the audience.
The next episode of Ted Lasso will be released on May 10.
