Ted Lasso Season 3 Did Nate Dirty by Deleting Crucial Scenes
A delete scene would have given Nate closure.
Remarkably, it's been two months since the end of the third and final season of Ted Lasso, yet the show lives on in our hearts. Centred around a fictional association football club, AFC Richmond, the hit Apple TV+ comedy delved into the complexities of the sport and the drama of the club's players, owners, and employees, including the titular character who has become one of the most endearing figures in TV history.
Indeed, the series presented a range of characters, each thrilling and unique in their own way, but some of them ended up being largely ignored by the showrunners.
One such neglected character is Nate. While the kitman-turned-rival-coach was a primary source of drama and conflict throughout the three seasons of Ted Lasso, he received significantly less development than other characters of comparable status. And to drive the last nail in his coffin, an important scene was cut from season 3, depriving Nate of closure.
Although Nate makes amends for his past betrayal and returns to Richmond by the end of the third season, the show doesn't adequately explain his transformation. Perhaps the deleted scene has something to do with it.
The scene was supposed to show Nate standing up to Rupert, Ted Lasso's main antagonist, after the kitman/coach witnessed Rupert physically assault West Ham's head coach. Mannion is the primary cause of Nate's misery - he persuaded Shelley to leave Richmond, interfered with his relationship with Jade, and attempted to manipulate him. Thus, standing up to Rupert would have been a significant step in Nate's character development. Moreover, the scene would have validated his redemption in the eyes of Ted Lasso fans, but alas…
Nevertheless, Nick Mohammed, the actor who portrayed Nate on Ted Lasso, seems fine with his character's arc.
'It was really deliberate on the writers' part to leave out key things,' the actor shared with Deadline. 'It's not important because the show is not about revenge. It's about doing the right thing. It's a lot more positive and optimistic.'
Although Ted Lasso has officially ended, it's not yet certain if there will be any spin-offs. Perhaps we might see our beloved characters, including Nate, once again someday. Hopefully, his story won't be left with loose ends next time.
