HBO’s Task detonates its biggest twist yet: Episode 4’s finale unmasks the mole inside Tom’s crew, upending the war with the Dark Hearts and setting the stage for brutal fallout.

Episode 4 of HBO's new crime drama 'Task' finally answers the question the show has been teasing for weeks: who inside Tom's task force has been feeding the Dark Hearts? Short version: yeah, it is exactly who you hoped it would not be.

The show in two lines

Created by Brad Ingelsby and led by Mark Ruffalo, 'Task' follows Tom Brandis (Ruffalo), an FBI agent put in charge of a task force chasing a string of robberies that point back to an unassuming family man named Robbie. The cast also includes Jamie McShane, Fabien Frankel, Emilia Jones, and Tom Pelphrey.

Episode 4: 'All Roads'

After last week's hint that there is a mole on the team quietly helping the Dark Hearts, Tom spends this hour side-eyeing everyone. He sets up a sting to smoke the leak out and grab a key player, Cliff, while also trying to locate a missing child tangled up in all of this.

Here is how the sting was supposed to go... and how it actually went:

  • Tom uses Ray's phone to bait Cliff, texting him as if he is Ray and setting a drug drop at Bailey Park.
  • The plan: arrest Cliff at the park and, ideally, use him to get to the child.
  • The problem: the mole tips off the Dark Hearts. Tom's carefully laid trap gets broadcast to the other side in real time.
  • At the park, Cliff gets jumped and beaten by Dark Hearts hitters before the task force can make a clean arrest.
  • The team chases the fallout and follows leads, but nobody meaningful gets caught, and the operation collapses.

The mole reveal

Episode 4 confirms what Tom has been dreading: the leak is coming from the top. Kathleen McGinty, his boss inside the FBI task force, has been secretly warning Jayson from the Dark Hearts about Tom's moves, including that Bailey Park sting. Yes, the person running the room is the person burning it down.

Meanwhile, inside the Dark Hearts

There is some deliciously messy inside baseball here. A leadership circle called the 'Mother Club' decides Jayson needs to go. On top of that, Perry discovers Jayson killed Robbie's brother, Billy, not for business reasons but over something personal. Perry confronts and roughs Jayson up, and Jayson basically begs off by pointing to the mole: their inside source saved them from an ambush, so, you know, maybe do not fire him just yet.

Where this leaves Tom

The sting blows up, Cliff is battered but not bagged, and the missing child is still out of reach. The urgency to root out the leak spikes, and the gut punch is that the mole Tom has been hunting is sitting in the boss's chair. All roads, unfortunately, led right back to Kathleen.
