What the premiere sets up

Episode 1, 'Crossings,' reintroduces FBI Special Agent Tom Brandis after he has stepped back from the job. He’s carrying a personal tragedy, which is exactly the kind of thing that gets you put in charge of an inexperienced task force chasing a string of violent robberies. Because of course it does.

On the other side of the story is Robbie Prendergrast, a seemingly regular family guy who starts ripping off drug dealers to keep his household afloat after his brother’s death. One bad tip later, Robbie finds himself in way over his head. So yes, it’s cops, robbers, and a lot of messy human fallout.

The character wrinkle that jumps out: Tom Brandis isn’t just an agent — he’s a former priest turned FBI Special Agent. That’s not a detail you see every day, and it does a lot of work setting the tone for the show’s moral tangle.

Where to watch it

You can catch 'Task' on HBO and HBO Max. HBO is the premium cable network run by Home Box Office Inc., part of Warner Bros. Discovery. HBO Max is WBD’s streaming service with both originals and licensed movies and shows — if you’re streaming, that’s where it’ll live alongside the linear HBO broadcast.

Official synopsis

"In the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, an FBI agent heads a task force assembled to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man."
