Takashi Miike Unites Milly Alcock, Norman Reedus, and Charli XCX for New Horror Film
Takashi Miike’s new Japanese horror just scored a casting coup: Milly Alcock and Norman Reedus are joining Charli XCX and more in the spine-tingling ensemble.
Charli xcx is teaming up with Takashi Miike for a Kyoto-set horror movie, and the whole thing has the exact chaotic energy you would hope for. The project, still going by the working title 'Untitled Kyoto,' starts filming in Japan next month. This was first announced nine months ago; now the cast just got a serious upgrade.
Who is joining Charli
- Milly Alcock ('Supergirl')
- Norman Reedus ('The Walking Dead')
- Kiko Mizuhara ('Attack on Titan')
- Show Kasamatsu ('Tokyo Vice')
Charli stars as Katie, one of three lifelong friends who meet up in Kyoto to reconnect. The girls trip goes sideways fast when Katie becomes possessed by a violent, tortured spirit played by Kiko Mizuhara, leaning right into classic J-horror territory. Charli and Miike came up with the story together, then brought in Ross Evans and Yumiko Aoyagi to write the script.
Behind the camera
Charli is producing through her Studio365 banner. Good World Productions, Yumiko Aoyagi Productions, and OLM are also on board as producers, with Alex Peace-Power serving as executive producer. Miike's longtime producing partner Misako Saka is producing for him.
Miike, in case you need a refresher
Takashi Miike has more than 120 directing credits in about 35 years, which is both mind-boggling and very on-brand for him. 'Audition' (1999) remains his most widely known film, but the run is stacked: 'Dead or Alive,' 'Ichi the Killer,' 'The Happiness of the Katakuris,' 'Gozu,' 'One Missed Call,' 'The Great Yokai War,' 'Sukiyaki Western Django,' '13 Assassins,' 'Yakuza Apocalypse,' and 'Blade of the Immortal.' He even popped up in Eli Roth's 'Hostel' and delivered the 'Masters of Horror' entry 'Imprint,' which Showtime refused to air; the DVD proudly wore the tag 'Banned from Cable Broadcast.'
Charli's acting lane is getting interesting
Her feature acting debut came with Legendary's remake of the notorious 1978 box-office hit 'Faces of Death'—a project that sat for a bit and finally lands in April. Since then, she has been picking wild, filmmaker-forward gigs: Gregg Araki's thriller 'I Want Your Sex,' Cathy Yan's 'The Gallerist,' Romain Gavras's 'Sacrifice,' Aidan Zamiri's 'The Moment,' 'Erupjca' from Jeremy O. Harris and Pete Ohs, and Julia Jackman's adaptation of the graphic novel '100 Nights of Hero.'
Along the way, she has shared sets with Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Jermaine Fowler, Olivia Wilde, Cooper Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jenna Ortega, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Chris Evans, Lena Góra, Will Madden, Emma Corrin, Rosanna Arquette, Rachel Sennott, and Nicholas Galitzine. Not a bad run-up to a Miike possession movie.
The vibe
A Miike-directed, Charli-fronted friendship-turned-possession chiller set in Kyoto? Sold. Cameras roll next month, so expect more specifics on roles and a proper title soon.
