Stranger Things Writer Has the Best Reaction to the 2023 WGA Strike
Netflix bosses, you know what you have to do to protect Steve.
The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike is probably going to be this year's most important event in the film and television industry. With the potential to impact practically every movie and series produced or planned for production in the US, the strike is currently a hot topic of discussion on social media.
And some reactions to these unfortunate events are just pure gold. Here's what Caitlin Schneiderhan, a writer and director's assistant on The Stranger Things, posted as her reaction to the strike.
Despite his initially minor role, Steve Harrington has become one of the most beloved characters on Stranger Things. During the show's Season 4, which aired in 2022, fans were seriously worried that the writers were preparing to make Steve a sacrificial lamb, killing him off in the season's finale for the sake of drama. The theory became so prevalent that Netflix even teased viewers by putting up billboards that read, 'Protect Steve.'
Against all odds, Steve made it past the end of Season 4, but the dangers of the upcoming fifth and final season of Stranger Things are still looming ahead. As Schneiderhan's Twitter status suggests, the character now faces a threat even bigger than Vecna himself — he can become a target for underpaid writers!
But, on a more serious note — yes, the crew of Stranger Things is wholly supporting the strike, and the show's production is expected to be delayed because of that.
'Writing does not stop when filming begins. While we're excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike,' the Duffer brothers wrote on Twitter, 'We hope a fair deal is reached soon so we can all get back to work.'
Perhaps the producers of other shows could have simply stockpiled scripts in preparation for the strike, but this strategy doesn't seem to work well with Stranger Things, which needs to have its script revisited and revised during production too.
While it's really sad that we'll have to wait some time longer for the new season, the WGA strike itself is certainly a good cause, and everyone hopes that the conflict will be resolved soon.
