Filming schedule and anticipated release date.

Stranger Things is definitely coming back for a fifth and final season on Netflix. In fact, we knew that before season 4 had even landed – and that was the biggest season yet.

And, while no date has yet been confirmed for its release, the current prediction is that it will air late in 2024 – or even early 2025.

When does filming start?

Speaking in March 2023, David Harbour (who plays Hopper) said “we start shooting…in June” so it’s hoped the new show will get off the ground in the coming weeks. Of course, there are concerns over how the WGA strikes – and potential SAG-AFTRA strikes - might affect filming schedules across the board. But all being well, we’ll see a tweet or an Instagram post in June to confirm things are moving forward as planned.

How long will it take to film the entire series?

According to the current schedule, filming should be wrapped up in June 2024. Then it moves into post-production. And with a reported budget of $20 million per episode, we can expect some stunning visual effects when it finally airs. Even if all goes according to plan, though, you can see why late 2024 is the very earliest we can expect the final season to start airing. And when you consider things like Christmas schedules, 2025 starts to look even more likely.

Which characters can we expect to see return?

To date, no major new characters or actors have been announced. But the good news is we can expect to see plenty of our favourites return to the show.

We know from his interview that David Harbour is preparing to appear in Stranger Things season 5. And other big names from the show who are expected to return include:

  • Millie Bobby-Brown – Eleven
  • Finn Wolfhard – Mike Wheeler
  • Gaten Matarazzo – Dustin Henderson
  • Noah Schnapp – Will Byers
  • Sadie Sink – Max Mayfield
  • Caleb McLaughlin – Lucas Sinclair
  • Jamie Campbell Bower – Peter/001/Henry/Vecna

Several roles are being cast for ‘minor’ parts, including a fair few for military personnel. Given how the previous season ended, this has led to speculation that we might see Hawkins in quarantine.

Then there’s the question of what will happen to the gates. Will Eleven have the power to close them? And if so, will she need to give up her life to make it happen?

And what of Max? We know Sadie Sink is coming back, but what exactly does that mean for her character?

All will be revealed. We just need to wait for what seems like a looong time before it is.
