• Argyle, played by Eduardo Franco, shows up in season 4 as Jonathan's stoner friend and coworker at a pizza place.
• In episode 4, he swings his van around to rescue Will, Jonathan, and Mike, and suddenly he is part of the so-called California Crew — the chunk of the gang operating out west while the rest are stuck dealing with Hawkins problems.
• By the season 4 finale, Argyle drives back to Hawkins with everyone, then wanders off to forage for mushrooms outside Hopper's cabin.
• That mushroom hunt is the last time we see him on screen.

So why is he missing in season 5?

Fan theories split a few ways. One idea: Argyle just headed back to California off-screen. The problem with that? Hawkins was placed under military quarantine, which makes slipping out kind of a big ask. Could he have left before the full lockdown kicked in? Maybe. But the timeline is murky.
