Stranger Things fans finally have answers about the missing Demogorgons in the show's epic finale. A new behind-the-scenes documentary, One Last Adventure, uncovers the creative choices behind Season 5 and reveals why the iconic monsters sat out the series' climactic battle.

Stranger Things fans love to overthink stuff, and the biggest missing-in-action mystery going into the last season was, 'Hey, where'd all the Demogorgons go?' If you watched the massive Upside Down showdown in Season 5 waiting for The Demogorgon Army™ to crash the party, you weren’t alone. Netflix's behind-the-scenes doc, One Last Adventure, finally drops the curtain on why those iconic monsters sat out the final battle. Honestly, it's kind of a fascinating peek into how these big creative choices get made.

Where Did All the Demogorgons Go?

First things first: this wasn’t accidental, and there’s no deleted scene where Demogorgons are lurking just off camera. The Duffer Brothers (aka, the creators) and their team straight-up decided to leave the beasts on the bench for the last big confrontation—The Abyss battle. And based on the footage in the documentary, it sounds like this conversation got pretty detailed and a little bit nerdy (in the best way).

Building the Final Battle (and Second-Guessing Everything)

So here’s how this all went down:

  • During Season 5 planning, the writers batted around the idea of a monster free-for-all: Demogorgons and Vecna and the Mind Flayer. Throw in some popcorn and that’s your summer blockbuster, right?
  • Matt Duffer made it clear what was new and exciting for them as writers: 'the thing that’s cool is the giant monster – that’s what’s new.' He’s talking Mind Flayer, here. You can basically feel him teeing up Godzilla vs. Eleven.
  • But then there was pushback. Writer Kate Trefry dropped what might be the most relatable concern on any TV show: 'Demo fatigue.'
  • Ross Duffer chimed in: 'That’s fair... Like how exhausting, right? It’s a lot.' So, cue executive decision: Demogorgons are out, and the finale leans into Vecna and the Mind Flayer showdown instead.

Plot Logic: ‘Why Would Vecna Bother?’

On top of just not wanting an overload of old monsters, the Duffers say there was a story logic angle, too. In a ScreenRant interview, Matt Duffer spelled it out.

'It felt more right to us... why does he need the Demos when the Mind Flayer is this giant thing and can attack them?'

So, basically: Vecna's got a kaiju-sized Mind Flayer on his team. Demogorgons suddenly seem a little redundant, and the Duffers didn’t want the climax turning into a rehash. (Also, let’s be real, the budget for that much CGI carnage would be 'insane' in a whole different way.)

The Takeaway

This is the sort of nitty-gritty fans never get to see unless a show does one of these behind-the-scenes deep dives. The Duffer Brothers actually debated it all out—was Demogorgon overload going to make the ending cooler, or just overwhelming and repetitive? In the end, they swung for something new.

So if you were pining for another Demogorgon dogpile, sorry. Your new favorite monster is the one the writers wanted, not the one they’d already used a dozen times before.
