The first teaser for Steven Spielberg’s UFO thriller Disclosure Day has landed, marking his return to alien territory with Emily Blunt and Josh O’Connor front and center. Story details are sealed tight, but the tease hints at Spielberg-scale awe and dread.

Steven Spielberg is back to his favorite hobby: making us look up at the sky and wonder what exactly is out there. The first teaser for his new UFO movie, 'Disclosure Day,' just landed, and it very much has that goosebumpy, lights-in-the-fog feeling. If you felt a little 'Close Encounters' deja vu, you’re not alone.

The vibe from the teaser

Plot-wise, they’re keeping the lid on tight. The teaser teases, the studio stays quiet, and nobody’s showing you the aliens (classic move). But the tone is crystal clear: awe, mystery, and that Spielberg sense of wonder. Josh O'Connor has already called it 'old-school Spielberg,' and I get it. This looks more 'reach out your hand' than 'blow everything up.'

The cast (it’s stacked)

  • Leads: Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor
  • Also starring: Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Michael Gaston, Elizabeth Marvel
  • Supporting: Elliot Villar, Tommy Martinez, Patricia Conolly, Noah Robbins, Chavo Guerrero Jr, Lance Archer, Brian Cage, Gabby Beans

Yes, those last three are pro wrestlers. Spielberg’s mixing it up, and I’m not mad about it.

Spielberg and Koepp reunite

Spielberg is back with longtime collaborator David Koepp, who wrote 'Jurassic Park.' That pairing alone should make your ears perk up. This is Spielberg’s first movie since 'The Fabelmans' and his first sci-fi since 'Ready Player One.'

Is it connected to 'Close Encounters'?

The teaser’s look and feel have people wondering if 'Disclosure Day' lives in the same universe as 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.' When asked, Koepp played defense like a pro:

'Like I’m going to answer that. Sorry Woodward! You’re trying to trick me into confirming something that I don’t want to confirm.'

So, not a yes. Not a no. Translation: keep speculating.

What is it actually about?

Universal is in full lockdown mode on story specifics. The teaser hints at something extraterrestrial but stays coy about the actual beings. Colman Domingo has seen the script, though, and went full heart-eyes about it:

'I finished reading the script and I bawled. I thought it was one of the most beautiful scripts about our humanity... I literally cried because Steven Spielberg believes in the possibility of the human beings we could be.'

Between that and O'Connor’s 'old-school' comment, expect a human-first sci-fi story. Less cynicism, more wonder. That’s the lane Spielberg drives best.

Release date and timing

'Disclosure Day' hits theaters June 12, 2026. Summer 2026 is already looking crowded, so it won’t have the box office all to itself. But if this really is Spielberg in full wonder mode, it’s going to be a contender.
