In the books, the eccentric minstrel remains a loyal friend to Geralt.

The third season of Netflix's The Witcher proved even more controversial than its predecessor, which was heavily criticised for significant deviations from Andrzej Sapkowski's source material. Many viewers were ultimately disappointed with Netflix's take on The Witcher, believing that the writers still failed to capture the essence of the books.

Yet, few can argue that apart from Cavill's Geralt, one of the most vibrant characters that make the series worth watching is Jaskier, portrayed by Joey Batey. Let's explore what happens to the fan-favourite eccentric bard in the books after the events of Season 3.

There are spoilers ahead, so we strongly suggest that you read Sapkowski's books before proceeding...

After the events in Brokilon Forest, where the dryads heal Geralt from injuries (and turn Cavill into Hemsworth), Jaskier teams up with the witcher. Milva and Cahir join them. Together, they set out in search of Ciri towards Nilfgaard, mistakenly believing that the girl is held captive by Emperor Emhyr. They are joined by the vampire Regis and the brigand Angoulême.

Later, in Toussaint, the group learns the whereabouts of Vilgefortz, who is holding Yennefer and Ciri captive. Our favourite Casanova, however, decides to stay in the duchy for the sake of his love affair with the local Duchess. The decision saves the bard from impending doom, as the entire group, except for Geralt, perishes. But even in Toussaint, Jaskier faces misfortune, as the Duke wants to have him executed after discovering his wife's infidelity. Fortunately, Geralt arrives in time to save his wayward friend.

However, the joyful reunion of Geralt, Jaskier, Ian, and Ciri is short-lived, as the latter two are summoned to the Lodge of Sorceresses, while the witcher and bard are sent to Rivia.

In the final novel of Sapkowski's saga, The Lady of the Lake, Geralt meets his end while trying to prevent a racist pogrom that humans perpetrate against dwarves and defending the latter from the pitchforks of angry peasants. Ciri and Ian, who is also injured, arrive at the last moment. Ciri heals them both with magic and teleports them to Avalon (yes, the one from Arthuriana).

So, it's safe to say that the role of Batey's character will become even more significant in future seasons, and he will undoubtedly continue to travel alongside Geralt, now portrayed by Liam Hemsworth.
