Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse producers Lord and Miller just dropped the first tantalizing hints about where the threequel’s plot is headed.

We finally have a date. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse lands in June 2027, closing out Miles Morales' animated saga and corralling a whole lot of web-slingers for one last swing. After that cliffhanger in 2023's Across the Spider-Verse, the table is set: Miles is stranded in the wrong universe, the Spider Society is on his heels, and Gwen Stacy is racing across realities with her crew to pull him back.

Where this picks up

The new movie opens with Miles still out of place and out of options, dodging the Society while Gwen searches the multiverse to find him. The stakes are personal, and this finale is designed as the payoff to everything the first two films set in motion.

How this became two movies

Writers/producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller said the third chapter started life as part of one massive movie. It grew too large to function as a single feature, so they split it to actually finish the arc the right way. The funny part? Once they carved off that second half, it still needed its own shape.

'At one point it was one movie, but there was too much movie there, so it was separated into two.'

They knew the destination, but the middle needed more work. The breakthrough was centering everything on Miles' family and what happens when your calling blows up your home life.

'We know where it's headed, but we needed to understand the middle. When your family is broken apart by your calling and your talents, how do you put them back together? How do you have it all?'

The bar they set for themselves

Lord and Miller are aiming to top the first two — visually, emotionally, the whole package. That self-imposed pressure is the engine.

'We put the most pressure on ourselves, wanting to outdo ourselves each time and show you things you haven't seen before.'

What to expect at a glance

  • Release: June 2027, positioned as the conclusion of Miles Morales' current animated story.
  • Story setup: Miles is trapped in another universe and on the run from the Spider Society; Gwen and her team are on a multiverse rescue mission.
  • Creative approach: Originally one giant film, split in two to properly land the arc; the finale leans hard into family, identity, and repairing what's been fractured.
  • Ambition level: Lord and Miller are pushing to make this the biggest and most inventive Spider-Verse chapter yet.

After years of waiting and a mountain of teases, the picture is finally in focus. The destination is set. Now we see how Miles, Gwen, and the rest of the Spider-crew stick the landing.
