Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Just Unveiled a Game-Changing Upgrade

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is swinging into 2027 with a first for the trilogy — a true IMAX-formatted release with expanded aspect ratio — confirmed by writer Christopher Miller after a fan asked about the film’s IMAX plans.
Quick one if you care about big screens: the next Miles Morales movie is finally flipping the IMAX switch the first two didn't. And yes, that means the tall frame.
The IMAX thing
Writer Christopher Miller jumped on social media and responded to a fan asking if "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" will use the full IMAX aspect ratio (aka the image expands vertically in IMAX theaters). His answer was short and very on-brand:
"heck yeah we will"
Worth noting: that doesn't automatically mean every single shot will fill the full IMAX frame. A lot of movies mix and match ratios, expanding for select sequences. Miller didn't spell out how extensive the IMAX sections will be, just that they're doing it. Still, it's a first for this series and a nice upgrade on presentation.
Release timeline (it's been a ride)
- Originally dated for March 29, 2024.
- Pulled from Sony's calendar in July 2023 due to the writers' and actors' strikes.
- For a while, the expectation shifted to sometime in 2025.
- Then in September 2024, Jeff Sneider (The InSneider) reported it was moving to 2027 thanks to production delays and the scheduling shuffle around other Spider-Man projects.
- Now officially set for June 18, 2027 — more than four years after 2023's "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
While you wait
If you want to revisit the first two: "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" is streaming on Fubo and FXNOW, and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is on Disney+ and Fubo as of now.
Bottom line: the movie's a ways out, but the team is clearly aiming to make it pop on a premium screen. Whether that means full-IMAX all the way through or big set pieces that open up, we'll have to see in 2027.
