Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Drops New Release Date — And It's Great News for Fans
After another calendar shake-up—this time with good news—Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been bumped up, bringing the follow-up to 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse to fans sooner than expected.
Quick update in the never-ending calendar shuffle: Sony just nudged Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse forward. Yes, forward. I know, I had to read it twice too.
The date (for now)
Beyond the Spider-Verse is now set for June 18, 2027. That is a one-week move up from June 25, 2027, which itself had been shifted from a prior June 4, 2027 target. The new slot puts it head-to-head with Pixar's Gatto over Father’s Day weekend. And yes, this sequel will land more than four years after Across the Spider-Verse hit theaters in 2023. Pace yourselves.
How we got here
- Originally announced for March 29, 2024.
- July 2023: Sony pulled it from the schedule due to the Hollywood writers and actors strikes.
- After that, there was chatter it might still make it out in 2024.
- September 2024: reporter Jeff Sneider said the movie was sliding all the way to 2027, citing production delays and the crowded pipeline of other Spider-Man projects.
- From there: June 4, 2027 became the plan, then June 25, 2027, and now June 18, 2027. Calendar Tetris at its finest.
What it means
Two things can be true: moving a big animated sequel up a week is rare and nice to see, and 2027 is still a long wait for a movie that was once supposed to arrive in early 2024. The match-up with Pixar is an interesting swing by Sony for a prime family weekend. Inside baseball note: for a film that has ping-ponged this much, any move in the right direction counts as progress.
