Executive producers Gaub and Baginski reveal their plans for The Witcher's future is less likely to see Geralt as the series lead.

In a recent interview with Yahoo! and the executive producers of the hit series The Witcher, Steve Gaub and Tomek Baginski made a revelation that may leave a few fans questioning the series' future. Confirming, in no uncertain terms, Geralt of Rivia is no longer considered the show's central character.

Yet, this begs the question, how can the series exist without Geralt at the forefront of the show?

What Gaub and Baginski Had to Say

According to the two executive producers, a decision was made to shift the spotlight from Geralt to Ciri this last season, mainly because of the show's source material, 'The Time of Contempt' by the original author Andrzej Sapkowski. As stated by Gaub and Baginski concerning the latest season 3, Ciri's character development takes a pivotal turn, making her more of a central figure than she has been previously.

During the interview, Baginski also highlighted the importance of staying true to the saga's narrative and respecting the original author's intentions. Describing how the source material has affected the season's narrative, he explained, 'This is also the book where Ciri –let's be blunt about this– becomes the main character of the saga, because this is how it was done in the books.' Although this may explain some of the decisions made for the series so far, it does raise a concern for how Ciri's prominence will now affect Geralt's character going forward; especially with Liam Hemsworth now set to take the mantle in season 4?

Geralt's Future Role in the Series

With Henry Cavil's performance bringing the character of Geralt to life so far and very much becoming a fan favorite of the show, tampering with the series' format certainly seems risky. Acknowledging that replacing such a significant character midway through a series is unusual, the producers reassured fans that the transition from Cavill to Hemsworth will be seamless and in line with Sapkowski's original vision.

Vaguely hinting at their plans, both producers stated that the adaptation will adhere closely to the lore set out in the books. While they refrained from revealing too many details, they expressed confidence that the change would be a natural and exciting progression for the character.

'It's very lore accurate,' Baginski added, 'It's very close to what was set out in the books, and I think this change will be quite flawless. But at the same time, it will be a new Geralt, a new face for this character, and I think it will also be very, very exciting to see.'

A Brave New Direction for The Witcher

As Geralt seems to continue to step further aside to allow Ciri to take center stage, The Witcher series ventures further into uncharted territory. According to Gaub and Baginski, this shift will inject fresh energy into the show while continuing to keep faithful to the source material. In reality, it will be up to the fans to see if the series can maintain its integrity without Cavil in the role. The producers may be heading for a more book-centric focus, yet will this remove The Witcher's greatest attribute in the process, Geralt himself?
