One of the most touching stories about animals, an anime by Hayao Miyazaki's student, and a frank story about loneliness.

After every Oscar ceremony, there are inevitable disputes: was this or that movie worthy of a statuette? We are not going to argue about who won, we are just going to tell you about the animated films that were nominated but did not win.

1. Klaus, 2019

The owner of a postal empire sends his lazy offspring north to the town of Smeerensburg to set up a branch capable of handling 6,000 letters a year.

The area is a battlefield between two clans: the families hate each other and compete at every opportunity. The young postman meets the hermit Klaus, who is able to change the life of the settlement.

Klaus is the creation of Sergio Pablos, who has worked on classic Disney animations and the Despicable Me franchise. The movie received critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for its fairytale atmosphere.

2. When Marnie Was There, 2014

The story is about a sick and withdrawn twelve-year-old girl named Anna who is sent to a seaside town for the summer. There the girl meets her opposite, the lively Marnie, who befriends Anna.

Don't let the colorful graphics fool you: When Marnie Was There is not only an adventure film for the whole family, but also a carefully presented psychological drama about the experience of grief.

3. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, 2002

Spirit the Mustang, traveling across the vast prairies, experiences many dangerous adventures. First, he ended up with the cavalry. But breaking in a young horse proved to be an impossible task, even for the best riders.

And then the colonel decided to starve Spirit to death, but this only spurred the mustang to escape. When Spirit encounters humans for the first time, he is not friendly. But then he changes his mind after befriending an Indian warrior named Little Creek.

4. Song of the Sea, 2014

A lighthouse keeper and a representative of the sea people, the Selkies, have two children – an ordinary boy, Ben, and a sea-born girl, Saoirse, whose mother leaves her on the coast and disappears without a trace.

Six years later, the father decides to take the children to the city to live with their grandmother, afraid that Saoirse, who still doesn't speak, will turn out to be a Selkie and run away to her mother.

Song of the Sea is one of the most beautiful and touching animated films of the last decade.
