Simu Liu Is Fired Up for His MCU Return in Avengers: Doomsday—and He’s Defending Superheroes
Simu Liu is fired up to jump back into the MCU with Avengers: Doomsday — and he’s not just returning; he’s taking aim at the loudest critics of superhero cinema.
Simu Liu is itching to jump back into the MCU, and honestly, same. It has been a minute since we saw him throw hands as Shang-Chi in 2021's 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,' and now he is suiting up for Marvel's next big crossover, 'Avengers: Doomsday.'
Back in the mix, and pretty thrilled about it
While doing press for Netflix's new animated movie 'In Your Dreams,' Liu told Variety he is genuinely fired up to be part of the next Avengers lineup. He talked about getting to share the screen with actors he grew up watching and called the whole thing a dream scenario. The vibe was very much: kid who loved superhero movies gets to play in the big leagues for real.
He also got personal about why these stories still work for him: he grew up believing that the outcasts, nerds, and weirdos could find their power and save the day. That message still matters to him now, even if not everyone is as warm on capes as they were a few years ago.
On superhero fatigue and the MCU's growing pains
Liu knows the discourse. Some fans and critics say the genre is tapped out and the MCU lost its fastball. He disagrees with the write-off, even as he admits there are real issues worth calling out, like how productions are run and how money gets spent.
"It is kind of fashionable now to hate on it."
That was Liu's bottom line. He is fine with specific critiques, but not with blanket dunking on superhero movies as a whole. He says that as someone who loved them as a kid and still believes in what they can stand for.
My take
I am with Liu here. There are missteps worth criticizing, and no, we might never hit that pre-'Endgame' frenzy again. But the comic well is deep, and there is still plenty of room for fresh stories if the execution is there. For now, I am curious to see what 'Avengers: Doomsday' looks like with Shang-Chi back in the fight.
Where are you at on this? Done with the genre, or still in as long as the movies deliver? Drop your thoughts below.
