Shrek 5 just got kicked further down the road to 2027, but the swamp’s getting new blood: Skyler Gisondo and Marcello Hernandez will voice Shrek and Fiona’s sons.

Shrek 5 just added two familiar voices to the swamp, and yes, we finally know who is playing the boys. Skyler Gisondo (the new Jimmy Olsen in Superman, with his own spin-off series on the way) and Saturday Night Live breakout Marcello Hernandez are voicing Shrek and Fiona's twin sons, Fergus and Farkle. The family is getting crowded in the best way.

Who is voicing who

  • Mike Myers as Shrek
  • Cameron Diaz as Fiona
  • Eddie Murphy as Donkey
  • Zendaya as Felicia (Shrek and Fiona's daughter)
  • Skyler Gisondo as Fergus
  • Marcello Hernandez as Farkle
  • Directors: Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn (longtime franchise hands back at it)

Release date and the crowded lane it drives into

DreamWorks has Shrek 5 hitting theaters on June 30, 2027. That puts it less than two weeks after another big animated sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Translation: summer 2027 is going to be loud, colorful, and very competitive.

So what is it about?

Plot is locked up tighter than the Dragon's tower. No official story details yet. What we can talk about is the look. It has been a long minute since the last mainline Shrek movie (Shrek Forever After came out in 2010), and animation has seriously leveled up since then. After Puss in Boots: The Last Wish went with a more painterly, stylized vibe, all signs point to Shrek 5 leaning that way too.

Not everyone is thrilled. Some fans think the visual shift is too drastic and are already floating the idea that DreamWorks should do a Sonic-style course correction if the first trailer lands wrong. For context: Sonic's design was famously overhauled after the initial trailer backlash. Whether DreamWorks tweaks anything midstream remains to be seen, but stylistically, this franchise is not going back to 2001-era renders.

Speaking of Donkey...

Eddie Murphy has been out there saying a Donkey solo movie is in the works alongside Shrek 5. He also mentioned he started recording his Shrek performance a while ago and expected to finish last year.

'Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well.'

Short version: more Donkey, sooner than later, if schedules hold.

Final thought

Shrek has big early-2000s DNA (yes, the Smash Mouth of it all), so I am curious how they tune it for 2027 without losing the attitude that made it pop in the first place. With Myers, Diaz, and Murphy back, Zendaya joining as Felicia, and the twins now voiced by Gisondo and Hernandez, the core is solid. Now we just wait to see what this new-look swamp actually looks like on June 30, 2027.
