A kilt is one of the most practical pieces of clothing. But there are some not-so-pleasant drawbacks.

Outlander star Sam Heughan is no less a true Scot than his character, Jamie Fraser. The actor may have spent most of his life in the lowlands of Scotland, but he can rightly be called a Highlander: Heughan is committed to Scotland's independence and reveres its historical and cultural heritage, as the docu-series Men in Kilts perfectly demonstrates.

But what is a Scottish Highlander without a kilt, you might ask? The actor himself knows, as he is an avid fan of the Scottish tartan. Heughan shared details about wearing a kilt, its pros and, of course, its cons.

Heughan and kilts

Sam Heughan is a big fan of wearing kilts, not just when filming Outlander or Men in Kilts, but has worn them outside of work all his life.

'Our kilt tailor [on Men in Kilts] he wears them all the time. I'll wear them sometimes if I'm going to a rugby match or a football match, or if I just feel like it,' the actor told People.

Ethical component

Outside Scotland, kilts are generally seen as traditional dress: while they have long been an integral part of Scottish pop culture and soft power, it is generally assumed that they are worn on special occasions, including sporting and other events. And while this is partly true, Heughan noted that it has always been a practical and informal part of attire.

'There isn't any really formality to it,' he said. 'Back in the day people wore kilts all the time. They were very adaptable and were really useful actually. They had so many layers and so much material that you could fold it in certain ways, make pockets out of it, you could carry a baby, you could carry your shopping, keep you warm in the winter.'

Even the finest garment has its flaws

And while the dense woollen fabric of kilts keeps you warm, gives you more freedom of movement and simply looks stylish, such a comfortable and practical garment has its drawbacks. For starters, they are associated with tactile sensations. This is mainly due to the sometimes unpleasant tactile sensations.

'When you sit down on the wet grass and you forget to do the little flick — it’s your bare a-- on the ground! Oh, it's horrible,' the actor complained.

We can only wonder if Heughan was wearing underwear under his kilt at the time, or if it was much worse than that. So folks, think twice before sitting on the grass in a kilt!
