Brendan Hunt has revealed the reasons why the two characters didn't end up together.

When Ted Lasso's creator, Jason Sudeikis, came up with the idea for the show, he imagined it as a three-part story – a fact the actor has mentioned on numerous occasions. After a four-year run, the sitcom concluded a couple of weeks ago with the twelfth and final episode of season 3.

It was a highly-anticipated finale, but some viewers were left disappointed about the way some of the story arcs ended.

Generally, Ted Lasso's ending was a great example of how shows should conclude – all the characters set out to live their own lives. However, one arc fans craved to see a happy ending to was left hanging. To many people's dismay, Keeley Jones and Roy Kent didn't end up together. Moreover, according to one of the show's writers, the two characters were never meant to have a happily ever after with each other.

As soon as So Long, Farewell was dropped, Brendan Hunt, who portrays Coach Beard on Ted Lasso, went on Reddit for an Ask Me Anything session with fans. The show's co-creator and fervent association football consultant/fan answered all kinds of questions, which included one about Keeley and Roy's arc. When asked by Redditors why Jones and Kent didn't reunite in the finale, Hunt gave a very detailed response.

'As for Roy and Keeley, I have known couples who seemed perfect together, and then suddenly find they broke up. People who haven’t (at least started to) work on their sh*t can sometimes find that they lose something they wish they’d kept,' the actor wrote.

The viewers' disappointment is understandable. Roy and Keeley were an exemplary couple during the second season of Ted Lasso. They were loving, caring, and supportive towards each other. More significantly, they were respectful. Naturally, many people considered their relationship idyllic and kept their fingers crossed for the two characters to get back together by the end of season 3. But it never happened, and there was another reason for that.

'Another thing is: we were playing with the “love triangle” trope there, the time-honoured television chestnut of “who will she choose!?!”. Answer: she doesn’t have to choose anyone. She is Keeley [effing] Jones,' Brendan Hunt further explained the writers' creative decision. 'Every TV love triangle ends in a couple. We wanted one that ended in three individuals, I guess.'

One thing is certain: Keeley and Roy are better off apart for now. After all, the characters live on and might still find a way to build a relationship in a potential spin-off.
