Fans name the best seasons before the writers went completely off the rails.

We all remember the hype surrounding the early seasons of Game of Thrones. Created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and adapted from George R. R. Martin's book series A Song of Ice and Fire, the show introduced many viewers to a brutal fantasy realism brimming with feudal fragmentation, intrigue, and frequent deaths.

However, everything changed after season 4 when the source material began to run out, and the writers followed only the key moments of the books, guided by Martin's general outline. Seasons 7 and 8, largely the show writers' invention, disappointed many people. Reddit users decided to name the best seasons that weren't primarily based on the books.

Although season 5 of Game of Thrones is based on A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons, significant plot divergences had already begun, with some intriguing storylines completely omitted. In the books, for example, Myrcella is still alive. Aegon Targaryen, nicknamed Young Griff, never made it into the show. Also, in the books, Sansa was not captured by Ramsay Bolton.

Despite these changes, many fans considered this season one of the best before everything descended into absurdity.

'What I like about season 5 is Jon Snow's arc. It's his best season imo. His scenes with Stannis, him becoming Lord Commander, his relation with Tormund and the Wildlings, Hardhome, and finally his death. It's a great season for him,' a Redditor pointed out.

Indeed, season 5 made Jon a true highlight of the series, showcasing the journey he had been on since the beginning. Notably, his general arc doesn't deviate too much from the books, where he also becomes Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, supports Stannis' faction and meets an equally tragic end at the hands of his Night Watch brothers.

'5 has some great moments - Hardhome could be the single best episode of GoT,' another Redditor noted.

The episode titled Hardhome, which was only partially based on the events of A Dance with Dragons was considered by many to be one of the best, thanks to the impressive action and drama as Jon and Tormund recruited an army of Free Folk to fight back against the sinister Night King.

With all that said, it's worth noting that the following season also had its share of highlights and memorable moments (just think of Hodor's heartbreaking backstory in the episode The Door). Nevertheless, it marked the beginning of the end of what fans of the book series loved about Game of Thrones.
