Queen Charlotte started as an avid reader of Lady Whitsledown’s Society Papers until her personal affairs became the topic of conversation.

Lady Whistledown’s Society Papers may start with the words, 'Dearest Gentle Reader' but more often than not, the writings that follow can be rather cruel and insensitive, and if Bridgerton fans didn’t feel that way already, then the Queen Charlotte prequel would have confirmed it.

In the first episode of Queen Charlotte, titled 'Queen to Be' the adult queen Charlotte is awoken in the night to the news that the princess royal has died in childbirth along with her baby, the only legitimate heir to the throne.

It’s no surprise to Bridgerton fans that Immediately following the tragedy is a publication by Lady Whistledown, not only sharing the royal family’s sad news but bringing the future of the monarchy into question. Lady Whistledown’s words following the announcement were:

'This author and all of England can only hope that Queen Charlotte finally turns her matchmaking energies onto her own family. After all, her majesty has 13 children, and now, not a royal heir from any of them. At least, not a legitimate one'

At the end of the same episode, she addresses her grown-up children about the impedance of giving her an heir, and is noticeably agitated, reminding them that, 'Lady Whistledown is talking about it, which means everyone will be talking about it.'

One Redditor thinks that Queen Charlotte is angry because Lady Whistledown 'points out her own flaws and her own hypocrisy…' and that the queen hates it 'because it undermines her authority as the leader of the Ton and as a person to be reckoned with in UK society.'

Queen Charlotte needs to be respected as a powerful and reliable leader, and Lady Whistledown’s writings put her appearance at risk, especially since there is nothing she can do to stop the publications.

Lady Whistledown has also made cruel comments about George; 'Bridgerton House currently appears to be emptier than the muddled head of her dearest King George,' quotes a Redditor, who went on to add, 'like, wow, that is nasty.'

Queen Charlotte 'is very protective of George and his legacy. It comes as no surprise that she would want to unmask Penelope.' according to another comment.

Queen Charlotte has made many things clear about the queen, one of the most important being;

Don’t mess with her, her family, and certainly not her beloved George. It makes sense now more than ever why Queen Charlotte has grown tired of the feud and has gone as far as to enlist the Bow Street Runners to find and silence her.

We'll have to wait till Bridgerton Season 3 to see what happens next in the growing feud between Lady Whistledown and Queen Charlotte.
