Project Hail Mary just dropped its final trailer, priming audiences for next month’s US theatrical launch with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller at the helm and Ryan Gosling starring as Dr. Ryland Grace in a high-stakes sci-fi adventure.

Ryan Gosling wakes up alone in deep space with a splitting headache and absolutely no idea who he is. Then he meets an alien. The final trailer for Project Hail Mary is out, and it sells a big, earnest sci-fi rescue mission with a buddy twist.

What the trailer sets up

Gosling plays Dr. Ryland Grace, a former science teacher who comes to on a ship light years from home. As the memories start snapping back, so does the nightmare: the sun is dying thanks to a bizarre substance, and Earth is on the clock. Grace has to science his way out of the worst group project imaginable—until he realizes he might not be doing it alone. The trailer leans into the amnesia mystery, the high-stakes problem-solving, and the odd-couple partnership at its core.

"Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone."

Lord and Miller doing thoughtful, high-concept sci-fi with a sincere alien friendship at the center is not the move I expected, but the trailer makes a strong case.

Who is behind it

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller direct. You know their track record: they kicked off Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs in 2009, flipped 21 Jump Street into a 2012 comedy machine, and then built a plastic empire with The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street in 2014. On the producing side, they have Brigsby Bear (2017), The Lego Batman Movie (2017), The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021), Cocaine Bear (2023), and more under their belt—not to mention their stewardship of the Spider-Verse era. This time, they are aiming for a cleaner, more grounded sci-fi vibe without ditching their precision and wit.
