Prime Video springs a holiday surprise with The Ghoul Log, a playful Fallout-themed Yule Log riff billed as an original movie and streaming this week.

Prime Video just dropped a holiday thing for Fallout fans, and yes, they are calling it an 'original movie.' In reality, it is a cheeky Yule Log riff set in the wasteland - and it is exactly as weird and cozy as that sounds.

So... what is The Ghoul Log?

It is a fireplace video, Fallout-style. The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins, settles in by the fire and listens to the radio while Mr. New Vegas - voiced by Wayne Newton - spins a story and cues up a few songs. The log itself? Looks like wood grafted to a ghoul hand. Festive. Disturbing. Both.

Why now?

This lands as the show gears up for Season 2, which Prime Video has set for December 17, 2025. The new season picks up right where the first one cut out and heads to New Vegas - a location game fans know well and the show is clearly ready to play with.

'Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there is almost nothing left to have. Two-hundred years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind - and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them.'

Quick refresher if you binged it months ago

  • Season 1 was a bona fide hit with critics and audiences, pulling in 17 Primetime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Walton Goggins.
  • Main cast: Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean, Walton Goggins as The Ghoul, Aaron Moten as Maximus, Kyle MacLachlan as Hank MacLean, Moises Arias as Norm MacLean, and Xelia Mendes-Jones as Dane.
  • Created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who also serve as showrunners.
  • All eight episodes of Season 1 are streaming now on Prime Video.

Bottom line

The Ghoul Log is a clever little stocking stuffer - more atmosphere than plot, sure, but it is Fallout through and through. If you are counting down to December 17, 2025, this is a fun way to warm your hands over the apocalypse in the meantime.
