Start your countdown because there's only one month left until Season 3 of Bridgerton premieres on Netflix. After a two-year hiatus, the fan-favorite period drama from Shondaland returns with a new story to tell. This time around, the show will focus on the love story of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington as they reimagine their relationship after years of friendship.
After the exciting at-first-glance romance between Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset in Season 1 and the intense love story between Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma in Season 2, fans of the Netflix drama are excited to see a new kind of romantic story. Unlike the previous leads, Colin and Penelope have known each other for a while and have a deep connection, which will certainly make their arc more wholesome. But their relationship could also get pretty ugly for one simple reason.
The Battle of In-Laws
While Colin and Penelope are destined to have a sensual love story with no signs of unhappiness – after all, they know each other like the back of their hands – their mothers, Violet and Portia, may have a hard time becoming a family. First of all, the two mothers haven't been good friends throughout the show's two seasons. On the contrary, Portia Featherington has often tried to bring the Bridgertons down in order to propel her own family in the Ton.
But more importantly, Violet and Portia are too different to peacefully coexist in the same family. The Bridgerton matriarch is all sweetness and light. She's a devoted mother who cherishes her children and wants them to be happy in life. The Featherington matriarch, on the other hand, also wants the best for her daughters, but she is much colder and more authoritarian, and doesn't really listen to her daughters' concerns, but simply does what she thinks is best for them. Naturally, this difference in mentalities will affect the relationship between Violet and Portia.
Like Fire and Ice
Given Violet's friendly demeanor, it's unlikely that there will be a feud between her and Portia. The Bridgerton mother isn't one to get her hands dirty with skirmishes. But the two characters won't get along right away. What's even more ironic is that Penelope may be the reason.
Violet and the rest of the Bridgertons have always been nicer to Pen than her own family. They've cherished her. They have supported her. And they've given her their love. Meanwhile, the Featheringtons have only criticized and bullied the girl. Now that Penelope is to become a Bridgerton, Violet will play a more prominent role in her life than Portia, which is sure to upset the latter. As a result, Portia's jealousy of the Bridgertons will only increase.
Hopefully, though, Violet and Portia's differences won't interfere with their children's happiness. Season 3 will premiere on May 16.
