Should you check out The Buccaneers?

With shows like Virgin River and Bridgerton topping Netflix's ratings, it's clear that the romantic genre is on the rise. And this isn't surprising because there's something escapist and comforting about immersing yourself in the happy love stories of relatable characters, especially when they're made with big budgets, great writers, and a brilliant cast.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before popular platforms, inspired by Netflix's success in this area, would have a go at the genre in an attempt to lure its viewers. Apple TV+ seems to have set its sights on the massive Bridgerton fandom with its new period drama, The Buccaneers. But let's see if it's really worth your attention.

What is The Buccaneers about?

The show is inspired by a novel by legendary author Edith Wharton, born in 1862, whose books portrayed the upper-class New York aristocracy of the Gilded Age. The Buccaneers is also about Americans, but it is set in Victorian London.

Wealthy American families come to 1870s London to find suitable husbands with titles for their daughters. Naturally, such a culture clash brings all kinds of drama, compelling storylines, relatable characters, and feminist angles. Interested yet?

When is The Buccaneers coming out?

The good news is that, unlike Bridgerton, Apple TV+'s period drama has a definite schedule. The first three episodes will premiere on November 8, 2023, and the rest will land on the platform weekly through December 13. In total, the first season is set to consist of eight episodes.

Who is in the cast and crew?

The Buccaneers will definitely have a female gaze as it is led by an all-female creative team with Katherine Jakeways as writer and award-winning Susanna White as director.

The core cast consists of young actresses that most viewers will be meeting for the first time, including The Society's Kristine Froseth and 13 Reasons Why's Alisha Boe. Perhaps the most recognizable name in the cast is Mad Men's Christina Hendricks, who will portray a mother of two girls in search of a husband.

Will The Buccaneers be as good as Bridgerton?

That's a question that we are not able to answer yet. The new show definitely has the potential to be the drama-filled, gripping romance that we have been longing for during the long Bridgerton hiatus. So it is definitely worth checking out.
