No time to garden? Meet the low-maintenance perennial that thrives on neglect, shrugs off pests, and keeps beds in bloom for months—built for busy weekend gardeners.

If you are over coddling roses and babying perennials that always catch something, switch to a workhorse. Garden geranium, also called cranesbill, is the set-it-and-forget-it plant that quietly does the job and looks good doing it.

Meet the low-drama perennial

This hardy geranium stays put through winter, shrugging off cold down to -40°C (-40°F). It settles in just about anywhere: full sun, partial shade, even dense shade. Bloom season kicks off in May and keeps rolling to September, with some varieties stretching into October. The color range is generous too, from soft pinks and lilacs to saturated violet, carmine red, and those moody, almost-black tones that make everything around them pop.

Planting plan

  • Timing: plant in spring (May, once the soil has warmed) or in autumn.
  • Location: choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot.
  • Soil: loose, well-drained ground makes it happiest.
  • Spacing: set plants 30-50 cm apart; by the next year they knit into a dense, flowering carpet.

Care, or the lack of it

Geranium handles dry spells with ease, thrives with minimal feeding, and rarely has disease issues. Translation: a beautiful, long-blooming garden without the weekly to-do list. If you want maximum color for minimal fuss, cranesbill earns a permanent spot.
