Outlander Stars Were Losing It Filming Season 7 Brianna & Roger Scene
It wasn't quire an anachronism.
We've all had those moments in life when you get the giggles at the worst possible moment and just can't hold it together no matter how hard you try.
And that's exactly what happened to Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin (and the rest of the cast) when they were trying to record an emotional scene for Outlander season 7.
The scene in question saw Roger and Brianna take the heart-wrenching decision to return to the 20th century after their daughter Mandy was born with a heart defect. Of course, it made perfect sense. Why take your chances with 18th-century medical procedures when the 20th century is so accessible?
However, in an interview with CinemaBlend, the pair were asked whether it was an emotional scene for them to film as actors. And their response was to start laughing. Not what the interviewer had expected, but nonetheless an intriguing development.
They went on to say that, despite the content of the scene, almost everybody involved had struggled to stifle a giggle throughout the filming of it. And, as is always the case in these circumstances, the reason for everybody being overcome with laughter wasn't even that funny. But once they got started, it seems, there was no stopping them.
So, what caused this widespread giggling fit?
During the scene, Roger has gems in his pocket which he takes out. But that wasn't all the actor was storing in his pocket. So, when he put his hand in 'all his snacks from the day' fell out. Yep. A teary 18th-century goodbye was interrupted by a whole load of 21st-century sweets and snacks coming forth from one man's pockets. Which, to be fair, would have probably been worth a fortune at the time!
Not that the incident was even caught on camera. Rankin was off-set at the time and preparing to come on and say his emotional farewell. But once the snacks were scattered, those who were supposed to be doing a bit of serious acting could see Richard Rankin crawling around the floor desperately trying to collect everything back in.
So, why not go back and watch the scene again and see whether you can spot a smirk or some shaking shoulders now you know what was going on just off-screen. Or whether those on screen were consummate professionals and managed to hide the fact that the giggles had got to them.
