Outlander Star Richard Rankin Already Working on His Next Series
This time, he's going to be the lead.
Richard Rankin is nowadays best known for the role of Roger Wakefield MacKenzie, the man who eventually married the main characters' daughter, in Outlander.
Prior to starring in the fan-favorite drama series, this Scottish actor had played a good number of roles in films, TV series, and on stage — and, of course, Rankin is not going to stop at this point in his career journey!
Although Outlander still has two seasons to go, Richard Rankin is already preparing for his next role in another TV series.
Late in 2022, the Viaplay streaming service announced a new adaptation of The Inspector Rebus novels by Sir Ian Rankin (no relation to Richard Rankin beyond both being Scottish). These novels have already been adapted to TV recently, as the previous Rebus series ran from 2000 to 2007. However, the new show is not going to rethread the old ground, instead delving into some untouched parts of the source material and relying on Ian Rankin's script that he is now developing specifically for the TV series.
The Outlander star Richard Rankin was picked to play the role of the titular character — a stubborn, determined, and hard-boiled detective from Edinburgh. The actor is going to follow in the footsteps of several talented performers who have portrayed Rebus before, most notably Ken Stot, who played the role throughout most of the above-mentioned series.
Richard has revealed that he is 'thrilled' about taking the role of Rebus: 'I'm a big fan of the series and Sir Ian Rankin. I feel very lucky to be given the honor of bringing such an iconic Scottish character back to TV screens and will give all I have to do it justice.'
The new Rebus series is currently being filmed in South Lancashire, and the production is in its early stages. Richard Rankin's fans are surely excited to see their beloved actor in this iconic role, while also looking forward to his appearances in the new season of Outlander.
Outlander Season 7 will arrive on Starz on Friday, June 16, 2023.
