Outlander: Blood of My Blood Showrunner Drops Bombshell About Spinoffs

Outlander may be poised to supersize its world, with spin-off buzz and new chapters gathering serious steam.
If you thought Outlander: Blood of My Blood was a one-off detour, think bigger. The franchise is clearly setting up a future where the main saga winds down and a bunch of side stories branch off. The team is not saying what those shows are yet, but they are definitely thinking about them.
So, are more Outlander spin-offs coming?
Short answer: probably, but nothing else is officially locked in yet.
Showrunner Matthew B Roberts says there are characters in this universe he is itching to explore. He would not name names — classic tease — but he did describe the franchise as a big river with plenty of tributaries, and those tributaries can support full shows. If you have followed Outlander for more than five minutes, that tracks.
What about that Lord John Grey show fans keep asking about?
This is the inside baseball part. A Lord John Grey spin-off has been floated for ages, and some book readers figured it would be the first offshoot since Diana Gabaldon already laid the groundwork in the novels. Instead, Starz led with Blood of My Blood, a prequel about Jamie and Claire's parents. That choice threw a few people.
Executive producer Maril Davis says Lord John is still on the table — just not first in line. In their view, a parallel love story that echoes Jamie and Claire was the cleaner way to expand the franchise right now while the flagship series moves toward the end.
"We would still like to do Lord John — that is absolutely still a possibility. It just was not the right time. Blood of My Blood felt like a natural extension. Telling another great love story with Jamie and Claire's parents, and having those parallel love stories, was too good to pass up."
Where things stand right now
- Blood of My Blood premiered in the UK on Saturday 9 August on MGM+, with new episodes rolling out weekly.
- Blood of My Blood is already renewed for season 2.
- The main Outlander series wraps with its final season, arriving next year.
- No other spin-offs are confirmed yet. Roberts is clearly eyeing multiple possibilities, but he is keeping the specifics under wraps for now.
Bottom line
Blood of My Blood was the strategic first step, not the only step. The Lord John Grey idea has not been shelved, just parked. And based on how Roberts is talking, do not be surprised if the Outlander river keeps sprouting new branches once the flagship sails into the sunset.
