The Beast in Me is tearing up Netflix, and a second season is on the table — but only if two conditions are met, its creator says, igniting speculation about where the story goes next.

Netflix has another thriller people are talking about, and it comes with the natural follow-up question: are we getting more of it? The Beast in Me landed and immediately stirred up Season 2 chatter. The person who could actually make that happen just weighed in, and his answer is basically: maybe — if two boxes get checked.

So, will there be a Season 2?

Showrunner and executive producer Howard Gordon was asked that at a special screening for The Beast in Me. On the red carpet, talking to PEOPLE, he kept it short and cheeky at first, then got practical.

"Always. We will see how the show does, and if there is a story, we would be open to it."

Translation: Netflix has to like the numbers, and the creative team has to like the story. When pressed on whether he has been secretly spitballing Season 2 ideas already, Gordon admitted there is nothing concrete yet: no official plan, just a few thoughts he is keeping to himself.

The two conditions that need to happen

  • The show has to perform — viewership and general reception matter.
  • The team needs a story worth telling — they are not forcing a follow-up just to have one.

Quick refresher on the show

The Beast in Me is an eight-episode psychological thriller that premiered on November 13. It centers on Aggie Wiggs, an author trying to get through a personal loss, who becomes fixated on her neighbor, Nile Jarvis — a high-profile real estate player with a cloudy past tied to his wife’s unsolved disappearance.

Claire Danes leads as Aggie Wiggs, with Matthew Rhys as Nile Jarvis. Rounding out the main players: Brittany Snow as Nina Jarvis, Natalie Morales as Shelley, and David Lyons as Brian Abbott, among others.

Where this leaves Season 2

The show is already behaving like a Netflix hit, which explains the immediate speculation about what a new chapter could look like. Gordon’s comments make the status clear: there is interest, there is no roadmap, and the greenlight depends on performance plus a story they actually want to make. In other words, the door is open — just not unlocked yet.
