Nick Should Ditch Meredith For Good After Disastrous Grey's Anatomy S19
Krista Vernoff hints that there's still hope for Meredith Grey and Nick Marsh's relationship after all that was said and done in Meredith's last episode as a regular, but fans feel that the reunion would be unfair to Nick.
The showrunner spoke to TVLine about the future of Meredith and Nick's relationship on the red carpet at the PaleyFest.
She didn't go into details but teased that their love story is not over and that the couple could still work through their issues by the season finale. However, this didn't sit well with fans who feel that Meredith has been horrible to Nick throughout Season 19 and that he deserves better.
The handsome transplant surgeon first appeared on Grey's Anatomy in Season 14 and quickly became Meredith's love interest, the first man to make her feel anything since she lost Derek.
Over the past five seasons, they had an on-and-off relationship that was fraught with problems. But they both seemed to be in love with each other, which made many fans root for them. However, in the episode that became Meredith's last as a regular, their relationship took a new toxic turn, which changed many fans' opinion about the couple.
The episode showed that Ellen Pompeo’s character didn't care much for Nick. Meredith decided to leave for Boston without talking to him first, she ignored his feelings, she was angry with him and mean to him, which led to that terrible scene when Grey pretended not to hear Nick when he called Meredith to tell her he loved her in a desperate last romantic gesture.
This became the final straw for viewers who thought that Meredith was not worth all the trouble for Nick.
Fans feel that Meredith has been too self-centered and emotionally immature in her relationship with Nick, and it would be a huge mistake for the writers to make him crawl back to Meredith just because she is posed as a perfect woman who can do no wrong.
In reality, such behavior would have gotten her dumped, and that's exactly what the fans want Nick to do. He is an interesting enough character without being tied to Meredith, and since the title character is gone from the show, why not give him a solo arc and find a new partner who deserves him and really cares about him?
Fans are hoping the creators do just that, but only time will tell if such a scenario is possible in the Grey's Anatomy universe. The two-hour Season 19 finale is set to air on May 18.
