Wayward may not be so limited after all: Netflix’s mystery thriller hit, sitting at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, is stirring Season 2 buzz as Toni Collette signals she’s ready to return as Tall Pines Academy head Evelyn Wade.

File this under: did not see it coming. Netflix's mystery thriller 'Wayward' was pitched as a one-and-done, but the cast and creator keep hinting there might be more gas in the tank. And yes, that includes Toni Collette sounding very ready to head back to Tall Pines Academy.

So... Season 2?

Collette, who plays Evelyn Wade, the head teacher at Tall Pines Academy, told ScreenRant's Liam Crowley she's up for a return if Netflix pulls the trigger on another season. This came up while she was promoting her new film 'Goodbye June,' because of course it did. The interesting part? She says she and series creator/co-showrunner Mae Martin have already kicked around where a continuation could go.

'Hell yeah. We had the best time. Are you kidding? And I love Mae [Martin]... We’ve talked about potential storylines, but I thought it had been buried. Maybe there is some hope. I don’t know. I would totally do it.'

That 'buried' comment is worth flagging: Collette thought the idea of a follow-up was done, but apparently there have been enough recent conversations to reopen the door. Also worth noting for timeline nerds: Collette is 53 now, and she sounds energized about this character.

What Mae Martin has said

Martin has been candid about how 'Wayward' was framed behind the scenes. In a previous interview, they said they were told it was a miniseries. But they also left the window cracked open:

'I was told it was a miniseries, but there’s definitely more story to tell, I think. We left all those characters in crisis, basically.'

Translation: the creatives built it to stand alone, but they also parked the characters at a cliff where more story would make sense if Netflix called.

The cast is game

  • Sydney Topliffe, who plays Abbie, said 'I would love to come back.'
  • Alyvia Alyn Lind has already put out the bat signal: 'Mae, if you’re listening, we’re here. We’re ready.'

Where Netflix stands right now

Short version: no official renewal yet. Netflix has not announced a Season 2, despite the encouraging noise from the cast and creator. If you want to catch up or rewatch while we all wait, the first season is eight episodes and streaming now on Netflix.

One last bit of context

For a show that was supposed to be limited, 'Wayward' connected: it currently sits at a 78% Rotten Tomatoes score. Between that and the talent wanting back in, the odds feel better than they did a few months ago. Whether Netflix agrees is the only piece that matters now.
