Netflix Bets Big on a Lavish Period Romance Poised to Be the Next Bridgerton
Hearts will ache, rules will break—yearning and forbidden love are about to take center stage.
Netflix just doubled down on swoony, old-timey romance. A few months before Bridgerton season 4 lands, the streamer announced a brand-new period drama called The Granville Girls. It is adapted from Cat Cahill's The Gilbert Girls novels, and if you like yearning, rules that are absolutely getting broken, and grand backdrops, this one is clearly aiming right at you.
Meet The Granville Girls
- Format: 8-episode historical romance
- Source material: The Gilbert Girls book series by Cat Cahill
- Showrunner/writer: Adriana Maggs
- Setting: The books live in rural Colorado, but Netflix's own synopsis puts the show in the Canadian Rockies at the Granville Hotel. So either the adaptation moves north or the early blurbing is a little messy.
- Cast: Not announced yet
- Release date: Also not announced yet, so patience required
The story setup
"As the great railway sweeps across the Canadian Rockies, Emma Daniels becomes a 'Granville Girl,' one of a select few women hired to work at the Granville Hotel. The job offers adventure, friendship, and a chance to support her family – if she can resist the hotel's strictest rule: never fraternize with the men. But when Emma's heart is captured by the hotel's mysterious builder, she faces a choice that could cost her everything."
So yes, there is a no-fraternizing rule. And no, Emma is not going to follow it. Expect slow-burn pining, guarded glances across polished lobbies, and that very specific brand of forbidden workplace romance that made Bridgerton such a reliable binge for Netflix.
How Netflix is pitching it
"The Granville Girls is a big blue sky series that offers the comfort of female friendship and the allure of period romance," said Danielle Woodrow and Tara Woodbury, co-directors of content for Canada at Netflix. "We're confident that audiences are going to be hooked from the first episode."
Translation: expect cozy friendships, sweeping landscapes, and a romance built to mainline.
Meanwhile, Bridgerton keeps the ballroom spinning
While we wait on The Granville Girls, Bridgerton season 4 is up next. The new episodes arrive in two parts on January 29 and February 26, and this time the spotlight is on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and newcomer Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha). Consider The Granville Girls your next stop once the last waltz ends.
