Morgan Freeman Lost a Bet to Zach Braff — and the Payoff Was Comedy Gold
A playful on-set bet backfired on Morgan Freeman, and Scrubs star Zach Braff cashed in with a strange, laugh-out-loud request. Braff has now revealed exactly what he asked the screen icon to do — and the payoff is priceless.
Zach Braff once turned a lost bet into the kind of Hollywood party trick you actually brag about. He told the story on daytime TV, tossed in a quick Harrison Ford update, and casually reminded everyone he has spent time working with some very famous voices.
The bet that became a voicemail flex
Years ago, while Braff and Morgan Freeman were working together, they made a friendly little wager. Nothing serious, just on-set competition that got silly. Freeman lost, and Braff did not waste the opportunity.
"Morgan lost a bet to me, and for years, he was my outgoing voicemail message."
Yes, really. If you called Braff back then, Freeman answered. Braff even performed the line again during the interview, dipping into his best Freeman impression:
"Hello, this is Morgan Freeman. Zach Braff can't come to the phone right now."
As far as celebrity party favors go, that one is hard to beat.
Harrison Ford: gruff exterior, good hang
Braff also talked about his time with Harrison Ford on the Apple TV+ comedy Shrinking. The headline: Ford is exactly how you think he is, until he is not.
"He's just a lovely man, Harrison. He's gruff. Very gruff. But once you get past that, we have a good time together."
Braff said the trick with legends is to treat them like normal people. In his words, they're used to folks getting weird around them, and that does not help anyone do the job.
Where they've crossed paths (and what's rolling now)
- Braff and Freeman first teamed up on the heist comedy Going in Style, then reconnected for Braff's 2023 drama A Good Person.
- Braff worked with Ford on Shrinking, which is currently airing Season 3 on Apple TV+.
- He also stepped back into Scrubs with a revival run: Season 10 premiered on Feb. 25.
