Sofia Vergara has revealed why it was so difficult for the cast to process the show's end.

Summary

  • There are few comedy shows that can be called iconic.
  • ABC's Modern Family was beloved by fans and cast alike.
  • Life got in the way of the MF cast recovering from the end of the fan favorite show.

While there are a lot of different sitcoms, only a few have achieved cult status. Frasier, Friends, The Office, and The Big Bang Theory are the first titles that come to mind when you think of a popular comedy show. But there's another sitcom that has left an indelible mark on television history.

When it debuted in 2009, Modern Family became an instant hit. Following the somewhat dysfunctional extended family of the Pritchett-Dunphies, this ABC mockumentary won over audiences with its lighthearted humor, cast, and bubbly storytelling that included ridiculously funny interviews with the characters. In this light, it is no surprise that MF lasted a whopping eleven seasons, a feat that modern sitcoms seem unable to achieve.

By the time it ended, Modern Family was one of the most popular shows on TV, with its stars earning millions of dollars per episode. Naturally, it was depressing to see the sitcom come to an end, both for the viewers and the cast. But the actors found it difficult to say goodbye to their characters and co-stars for one reason in particular.

Unfortunate Timing for Wrapping Up

Over the years, the Modern Family cast became close, and the younger cast members literally grew up on the show's set. That certainly made parting ways difficult. But there was also a more objective factor at play.

'It was heartbreaking. We were all very, very sad because, you know, [the cast] is the people you want to see every day and you do get separated when you finish,' Sofia Vergara, who portrayed fan favorite Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the show, shared in a recent interview.

'Also, the day that we ended Modern Family – two weeks later – the pandemic happened so we didn't see each other. Really, it was just like, oh, suddenly we don't see each other anymore. It was really hard. But you know, now we get connected when we can. Everybody's doing their own thing but every time we can we connect.'

Certainly, it was a difficult time for the Modern Family cast to try and move on, as the show was a huge part of their lives and life itself seemed to come to a halt during the pandemic. As a result, the actors must have felt like they were in limbo – stuck between the beloved mockumentary and new chapters in their careers that were too oblique at the time. But all's well that ends well...
