After the success of A Minecraft Movie (2025), the block-building franchise is leveling up with an untitled sequel hitting theaters July 23, 2027.

Well, that didn’t take long. After A Minecraft Movie blew up in 2025, the follow-up is official, dated, and aiming right at a crowded summer: the untitled sequel lands in theaters on July 23, 2027.

The date is set, and the competition is brutal

The movie’s official account planted the flag on October 9, 2025, and yeah, July 2027 is going to be a traffic jam. Here’s the lay of the land: DC’s Man of Tomorrow opens July 9, then a double-header on July 23 with The Simpsons 2 and the Minecraft sequel sharing the same weekend, and A Quiet Place Part III creeping in on July 30. That is a lot of four-quadrant real estate within three weeks.

The Simpsons 2 vs. Minecraft sequel showdown is the obvious flashpoint. For context on both brands: The Simpsons Movie (2007) hauled in $527 million worldwide off a $72 million budget, according to The Numbers. A Minecraft Movie (2025), directed by Jared Hess, blasted to $957 million worldwide on a $150 million budget, also per The Numbers. Throw in a new Superman movie and another A Quiet Place, and you’ve got a month where multiplexes won’t catch their breath.

And it doesn’t stop at July. August and September 2027 are loaded too: Miami Vice is set for August 6, a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem entry is dated for September 17, and DreamWorks has an untitled animated film arriving September 24. Summer 2027 looks like it’s been bulking up for years.

Why this feels like the last great movie pile-up

If this lineup gives you déjà vu, you’re probably thinking about summer 2013—the last time it felt like every weekend was an event. That run turned into a legit box office dogfight. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man 3 ultimately took the crown by blasting past $1 billion worldwide. For perspective, here’s how the U.S. summer Top 10 shook out that year (domestic and worldwide grosses via Box Office Mojo):

  • Iron Man 3 — $409 million domestic, $1.2 billion worldwide
  • Despicable Me 2 — $368 million domestic, $970 million worldwide
  • Man of Steel — $291 million domestic, $670 million worldwide
  • Monsters University — $268 million domestic, $743 million worldwide
  • Fast & Furious 6 — $238 million domestic, $788 million worldwide
  • Star Trek Into Darkness — $228 million domestic, $467 million worldwide
  • World War Z — $202 million domestic, $540 million worldwide
  • The Heat — $159 million domestic, $229 million worldwide
  • The Great Gatsby — $144 million domestic, $353 million worldwide
  • The Conjuring — $137 million domestic, $319 million worldwide

Can summer 2027 top that roster? Only one way to find out.

Who’s making the Minecraft sequel (and what they’re not saying)

Jared Hess is back in the director’s chair and co-writing the script with Chris Galletta. Plot details are locked up tight for now. On the producing side, it’s a big bench: Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa are all aboard. Momoa, of course, starred in the 2025 film, a Legendary and Warner Bros. release.

"Oh, it’d be so much fun... I mean, look, there’s the world’s infinite, so many amazing mods and characters and biomes we haven’t explored yet, so it’d be amazing."

That was Hess talking about sequel ideas earlier, and now he gets to actually build them.

Bottom line: A Minecraft Movie 2 hits theaters July 23, 2027, opening the same day as The Simpsons 2 and just a week before A Quiet Place Part III. Sharpen your pickaxe and your schedule—July is going to be busy.
