Milina Might Go Canon in The Rookie Season 8—But There's a Catch

With The Rookie gearing up for its eighth season, fans are once again playing matchmaker. And this time, the spotlight isn't on Chenford — it's on Milina, the fan-coined ship name for rookie Miles Penn and Officer Celina Juarez.
Miles, played by Deric Augustine, joined the team in Season 7 as a transfer from Houston and quickly became the standout newcomer. His scenes with Celina (Lisseth Chavez) sparked enough chemistry that fans started rooting for a possible slow-burn romance. The catch? Celina's still in a relationship with musician Rodge (played by Zander Hawley), and Augustine himself previously said he hoped the characters would stay just friends.
But fans might have some backup — from the top.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, showrunner Alexi Hawley said he's not ruling anything out:
"If it felt organic, I'm not going to say no to it. It didn't occur to me until you said that. I do really like them together. Yeah, I don't know. That's interesting. I hadn't thought of that. If it feels like it's where the story wants to go, then maybe. You never know."
Translation: it's not confirmed, but Milina is officially on the radar.
Still, Hawley made it clear he's cautious about turning The Rookie into a comfort-food drama full of happy endings. Romance is part of the show's DNA, but it has to serve the story — not dilute the stakes.
"We love [the characters], we want them to be happy, but there's inherently less drama in that... Because then it's just a feel-good show, and that's not what we are, necessarily. We're a fun show to watch, but I don't want to just be soft, so to speak."
So if Milina does become canon, don't expect a smooth ride. Hawley's style leans more "slow burn and chaos" than "happily ever after."
Here's what we know so far:
- Season 8 of The Rookie is currently in production, with a mid-season 2025 premiere window.
- Miles and Celina have strong fan support, but only a friendship — for now.
- Alexi Hawley is open to pairing them, but only if it fits organically.
- The show won't sacrifice dramatic tension for romance — expect twists if it happens.
Past seasons are available to stream on Hulu.
