Magic returns to HBO as 11-year-old Arabella Stanton steps into Hermione for the Harry Potter reboot, with production underway and the young star just starting to film as she embraces the beloved role.

HBO is rebooting Harry Potter for TV, and yes, the hype machine is already humming. The latest: the new Hermione, Arabella Stanton, spoke about landing the role and quietly slipped in that cameras are rolling.

Filming is officially underway

Stanton, who is 11, confirmed in a recent Associated Press interview that production on the series has started.

I have just started filming.

She did the kid-actor version of tight-lipped after that — excited, but careful not to spill anything she shouldn’t. A little behind-the-scenes tidbit: she was sitting with co-stars Frankie Treadaway and Max Lester during the interview.

She is double-dipping as Hermione

On top of the show, Stanton is also voicing Hermione for Audible’s Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions. So if you hear Hermione in your headphones and then see her on HBO, that is not your brain playing tricks on you.

Right kid, right character

Stanton says she first read the books at eight and plowed through them, which tracks. She is a full-on book person — loves reading and writing, is fine with school but not obsessed — and that shared love of books is what she says links her most to Hermione. She is also looking forward to all the spell-casting moments. Same.

Favorite magical gear

Asked about her go-to wizarding gadgets, she went classic. Not subtle choices, but honestly, hard to argue:

  • Time Turner
  • Invisibility Cloak

Her take: you cannot use those in real life, but inside the story they snap you straight into another world. Fair point.

Stepping into big shoes

Calling the role a dream come true, Stanton made it clear she respects the actors who came before her — she specifically name-checked Emma Watson. No pressure, right?
