What you need
- 2 chicken fillets, about 300 g total
- 2 burger buns
- 1 medium tomato
- 1 small cucumber
- 3 to 4 lettuce leaves
- 50 g hard cheese, optional
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil for frying
- Salt, about 1/2 tsp
- Black pepper, about 1/4 tsp, to taste
- 2 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp dried garlic
- 2 to 3 tbsp favorite sauce: ketchup, mayo, garlic, or barbecue
How to make it
Start with the chicken. Lay each fillet flat and slice it horizontally to make thinner cutlets that cook quickly and stay tender. In a bowl, mix paprika, dried garlic, salt, and black pepper. Rub the seasoning all over the chicken and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. This short pause does more than you think.
Heat a skillet over medium, add the vegetable oil, and cook the chicken for 4 to 5 minutes per side until the surface turns golden. To be sure it is done, make a small cut in the thickest spot; the juices should run clear.
While the chicken cooks, handle the fresh stuff. Slice the tomato and cucumber into thin rounds. Split the buns and toast the cut sides in a dry skillet or a toaster. A quick toast keeps the bread from soaking up all the sauce and adds a little crunch. Worth it.
Build time. Spread your sauce on the bottom bun, add lettuce, then tomato and cucumber. Set the hot chicken on top and, if you like, add a slice of cheese so it softens slightly from the heat. Cap it with the top bun and serve immediately. It is clean, bright, and satisfying without trying too hard.
