Fans are in uproar as a new insider report claims Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine won’t be the main focus of Marvel’s next saga, sparking outrage across social media and speculation about who will take up the iconic claws.

If you thought Hugh Jackman was back as the definitive Wolverine for a new age of Marvel movies, you might want to hit pause on celebrating. According to a recent leak making the rounds (thanks to @JamesMackwl and posted by @marvelousgeek_ on X), Marvel Studios is apparently going full multiverse with their next Wolverine plans. Not only is Jackman returning, but he won't be the only guy rocking the mutton chops and claws.

Two Wolverines, Two Problems?

Here’s the gist, boiled down for maximum clarity:

  • Hugh Jackman is coming back, but specifically as 'Old Man Logan'—which, if you know the comics, means we're talking about the aging, battle-worn version of Wolverine.
  • There’s apparently another (as-yet-uncast) actor set to play a younger Wolverine, who’ll step into the role for the next round of X-Men movies.

So, yeah—it sounds like Marvel wants their cake and to eat the timeline, too. Fans? Not exactly thrilled, especially those who were hoping for a Jackman-centric Wolverine renaissance.

Quick Dive: Who Even Is Old Man Logan?

Some context for anyone who only half-remembers the comic storylines: Old Man Logan is basically Wolverine cranked up to max grizzled. In the comics, all the major superheroes are gone, supervillains run the world, and Logan is hiding out on a dusty patch of California with a family. Despite his age (read: senior discount level), he still has all the classic Wolverine powers:

Superhuman senses, durability, healing (but slower, because, well... old), the adamantium skeleton, and martial arts skills sharper than his claws. He also manages to out-survive plenty of people who should’ve killed him a dozen times over.

Hugh Jackman Keeps Throwing Curveballs

Now, this might make you wonder—didn’t Jackman say he was done after 2017’s Logan? Yes, he did. But here’s the twist: apparently even Wolverine’s retirement isn’t set in stone.

'Maybe... I am never saying "never" ever again... I did mean it when I said "never" [the first time], until the day when I changed my mind. But I really did for quite a few years, I meant it.'

That’s Jackman on The Graham Norton Show, admitting that Deadpool (of all things) is what got him itching to suit up again. So “one and done” was more like “one and... well, let’s just keep the door cracked.”

Should We Be Excited or Annoyed?

On one hand, seeing Jackman do his gruff, world-weary Wolverine again is basically catnip for fans (myself included). On the other, this multi-pronged recasting feels like Marvel hedging their bets instead of just making a choice. If the rumors hold, post-Deadpool 3 Jackman will stick around as Old Man Logan, while a new, younger face will take over for the next chapter of mutants-vs.-Doom and company.

Honestly, it’s a little weird and a little exciting and will probably annoy plenty of long-time MCU watchers who just want one definitive Wolverine. But isn’t that kind of Marvel’s brand these days?

Would Jackman’s Wolverine stand a chance against Doctor Doom? Who knows—at this point, I’m just hoping for something that’s fun to watch (and not another multiverse identity crisis).
