MCU Phase 7 Reportedly Taps Russo Brothers to Lead Marvel Parliament After Multiverse Saga Fallout
Marvel’s roadmap stretches far beyond the next Avengers: with a Doctor Doom saga looming, the studio is quietly lining up a potential reunion with Anthony and Joe Russo.
Here is the gist: a new round of chatter says Marvel wants the Russo Brothers back in the mix after Secret Wars, not necessarily to direct right away, but to help steer the overall story. If true, that could be a big swing as the studio aims to clean up the messier parts of the Multiverse era and move into a so-called Mutant Saga. Also floating around in the rumor mill: a Doctor Doom-heavy Avengers stretch and something called Avengers: Doomsday. None of that is official yet, so take a breath.
Where this is coming from
The Cosmic Circus relayed comments from industry scooper Alex Perez, who fielded a fan question on Discord about whether the Russos were done after Secret Wars or would be involved in the next phase to help set up the Mutant Saga. Perez says Marvel intends to loop Anthony and Joe Russo into the studio's big-picture story brain trust after Secret Wars, the internal group often nicknamed the Marvel Parliament, to help guide the next Saga.
"They want to avoid the mistakes they made with the Multiverse Saga in trying to branch out to many different story points and having multiple open endings without having a clear direction."
Per Perez, Marvel still wants to play in the multiverse, but the studio knows it stumbled when COVID-era pivots and internal pressure led to projects getting pushed out before they were truly ready. The reported fix: bring in people who have already threaded multiple characters and arcs at scale. The Russos would give input on which characters to introduce and when, rather than leaving every branch to spin off on its own.
So... are the Russos directing Avengers again?
That is not what Perez is saying. The claim is about oversight and story shaping post-Secret Wars, not about a signed directing deal. Marvel has not announced anything. As always with this stuff: promising rumor, not a press release.
Why the Russos make sense to Marvel
Every time the Russos touched the MCU, it turned into a pivot point. Quick refresher:
- Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014)
- Captain America: Civil War (May 6, 2016)
- Avengers: Infinity War (April 27, 2018)
- Avengers: Endgame (April 26, 2019)
If Marvel is trying to bring sharper focus to the next mega-arc, handing the whiteboard to the guys who stuck the Endgame landing is a pretty logical move.
About that Mutant Saga (and Doom)
Mutants are already seeded in the MCU, even if the main X-Men lineup is not locked in on-screen yet. Namor calls himself a mutant in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ms. Marvel literally gets a mutation reveal, and She-Hulk slipped in a cheeky newspaper item winking at Wolverine. Perez frames the Russos' reported role as helping set up the Mutant Saga in the next phase (think Phase 7 timing).
There is also a wave of unconfirmed talk that Patrick Stewart's Professor X will bring over familiar faces from the Fox era in an Avengers movie rumored to be titled Avengers: Doomsday, with Doctor Victor von Doom looming large across upcoming Avengers outings. Again: that is the rumor as circulated; Marvel has not confirmed the movie title, the casting, or Doom's arc.
The wild theory corner
One fan theory making the rounds: mutants have always been in the MCU timeline (yes, during the Battle of New York and Endgame), but Charles Xavier used Cerebro to wipe the world's memory of them, which is why we are only now catching up. Fun idea. Not canon unless Marvel says so.
The bottom line
If Perez is right, Marvel wants fewer dangling threads, a clearer path through the next Saga, and the Russos in the room to help map it. That would be smart. Until Marvel actually announces it, file this under well-sourced rumor with a side of cautious optimism.
Avengers: Endgame is streaming on Disney+ if you need a refresher on why the Russos keep getting invited back into the conversation.
